iphone 3g, replaced home button but lcd damaged, can I just replace LCD?

Hello everyone, I have repaired a few phones now with great success. Well I say that until today. I have a 3g. I was trying to replace just the home button on its own. I used a spudger tool to life up the glass off the lcd and replaced the home button. Now when switched on the screen is translucent white (you can just make out icons behind the white) with some larger marks on the screeen as well. So I am guessing I have damaged the LCD with the spudger tool.

My question is this :

Can I get away with just buying the LCD and replacing that or do I need to buy a complete front assembly?
