iPhone 3G Problem downloading app store apps

Hey hi there,

I got my Old iphone 3g
having a lil bit Problem, when i download from store it says ''you have old version''
how do i upgrade ?
if i upgrade nothing will happen with my phone ?
i want to confirm this..

The Latest version of ios on the 3G is 4.2.1 so there will be many apps that dont work, there is also no way to upgrade as apple have forgotten about the device
