iPhone 11 wont light up when on a call..?

If I’m doing FaceTime or a video chat I have no problem but when on an audio call when I pull my phone away from my face it won’t light up and if I hit the power button it will light up for about 2 seconds but the screen won’t respond.
I do have a waterproof case on my phone and I’m wondering if that’s the problem? I need the waterproof case though because of work and a two year old lol.

Test your iPhone without the case to see if the problem persists.
