iMessage says image is downloading but cannot see it

My wife's iPhone 5c says that the iMessage image is downloading. Here is the text:

My phone is set-up identically to hers, at least I think it is. iMessage is why my wife got the iPhone in the first place, and she is upset that she cannot get photos from our daughter. She is irritated to say the least.


Any suggestions?

No panic. There is always an answer to this problem.

First thing to try is sign out of FaceTime and iMessage on ALL devices that share the same AppleID, not just the one you are having problems with. Then sign back in to both apps.

I'm assuming your devices are stock. If any of them are jailbroken, can you indicate this, because I've come across Cydia apps that can affect iMessage.
