How to stop mail synch

I must be missing something. I would like my iPhone to NOT load email every time I open the mail app. I've tried stopping fetch, going to manual. Nothing works so far.................any help??

Settings/mail/push settings/change to fetch/ advanced change to fetch and turn push off
