The top level of my iPhone looks like this.

When I touch the compass looking icon at the bottom, Safari pops up and I can view the last place I visited, view a set of icons for the things I see the most, or enter a URL. When my wife does it on her phone, it starts an app to show something, like the NBC app. I cannot find an icon for Safari. How do we get to Safari and how to make it the default for that icon on her screen?

At a guess, I’d say that your wife has inadvertently deleted the Safari app. She can go to the App Store and download it again.

You can do a search for Safari on her phone by entering the name into Search, just in case the icon has somehow changed.

It used to be impossible to delete the apps that were supplied with the phone but Apple changed this a while ago.

Can you let us know which phone and iOS version your wife has? It can make a difference.

Safari will open to the last viewed site if that site was not shut down. So if you went to NBC and then didn’t leave the NBC site, that would be why your Safari opens to NBC.. If you want it to default to a search engine, like Google, select that search engine in settings.
