How stop receiving text messages from previous iphone owner.

So I bought an iphone from a family member. I immediately started receiving text messages from his friends. I called ATT and they changed the phone number. I am still receiving text messages from his friends. How can this be?

they're probably sending them as iMessages.

You should erase the phone and restore it to factory settings, then set it up as a new phone with your Apple ID. Make sure find my iPhone is turned off before erasing. If the original owners ID is still on the phone, his Apple ID and password will be needed to turn off find my iPhone and erase the phone. This should stop the unwanted messages.
