Google has announced that it plans to launch a new app, Street View, which will allow users to submit a photo sphere to Maps, and even those captured via compatible 360-degree cameras. The app is said to be released for iOS and Android in August.

Google Street View is a technology part of Google Maps and Google Earth that provides panoramic views of many streets in the world. Launched in 2007 in several cities in the United States, the service is constantly expanding to new areas from all over the word.

With the upcoming mobile app, Google is looking to merge Google's Views community with Google Maps. The app will replace the Photo Sphere Camera on the iOS App Store. The new app will also allow anyone to submit a sphere to Maps, instead of just Google and authorized contributors.

For the beginning, the new app will link to the NCTech iris360 and the Giroptic 360cam but Google says more cameras will be supported in the future.

This move from Google is probably aimed at expanding the reach of its Google Maps products, as recent reports are showing that Apple is increasingly interested in seriously improving its own mapping application.

If they're putting this effort into improving theirs maps, it shows they're worried about how fast Apple Maps are improving and are doing what they can to stay in front.
