9to5 Mac reports that following on from reports back in March and April from KGI that said that Apple would be releasing an all-glass-casing iPhone in 2017, Nikkei has heard from a source that Foxconn is currently developing a glass casing for smartphones, prompted by Apple’s plans to completely redesign the iPhone in 2017, including switching from aluminum to all-glass casing.

The Nikkei story said that Foxconn’s work on the all-glass casing is already far advanced, having begun last year.

The last glass-cased iPhone released by Apple was the iPhone 4/4s (pictured), which had a glass back and stainless steel edges. There’s also talk that the 2017 iPhone will have a curved screen, thus doing away with the need for the steel bands.

Turning to the display of the 2017 iPhone, Nikkei’s source says that Apple is expected to be upgrading its display from LCD to OLED, which is something that many iPhone users have long been calling for.
