Siri on iOS is usually a fantastic feature to have. While the feature is getting more complex and robust with new iOS firmware updates, it can also make mistakes some of the time.

On Wednesday, Facebook soft-launched a new feature to take on Siri called "M". M is an artificial intelligence feature, like Siri, built into Facebook's Messenger app. Right now you're probably saying, "Oh great, now we have Siri, Cortana, OK Google, etc."

Although there seems to be an abundance of these artificially intelligent personal assistants, Facebook's take is a bit different. Not only does M use artificial intelligence, but also the help of real Facebook employees. That's right, somewhere at Facebook there's a team of people trying to help someone find the closest McDonald's.

"It won’t take long for Messenger’s users to realize M can accomplish much more than your standard digital helper, suspects David Marcus, vice president of messaging products at Facebook. “It can perform tasks that none of the others can,” Marcus says. That’s because, in addition to using artificial intelligence to complete its tasks, M is powered by actual people," writes Facebook.

Currently M has only launched for a limited number of users in the San Francisco Bay Area. However, Facebook notes that the service will eventually roll out to all of Messenger's 700 million users.
