MacRumors writes that according to Barclays investment bank, all three of Apple’s forthcoming iPhones, said to be the iPhone 7s iPhone 7s Plus, and iPhone 8, will all feature a “full spectral sensing” ambient light sensor for “True Color” screens. It is thought that the sensors will be supplied by AMS, an Austrian semiconductor manufacturing company.

In a research note, Barclays say that “for the expected iPhone 7s models, as well as the iPhone 8, we think ams’s content increases due to the inclusion of its full spectral sensing ambient light sensor, as already seen in the iPad Pro for that device’s True Color screen functionality. We estimate this to be material step-up in content from the $0.60 range to $1.00.”

Currently, the only Apple device to have a True Tone display is the 9.7-inch iPad Pro, which uses its four-channel ambient light sensors to automatically adapt a display’s colour and intensity to match the colour temperature of the light of the immediate environment, both indoors and outdoors.

In practice, this means that when using an iPhone or iPad in a dimly lit room with incandescent bulbs, the display will look warmer and more yellow. Or if you’re using them outside on a cloudy day, for example, the display will look more cool and blue in tone.
