does GPS usage = data usage ?

im going to be traveling out of the country for a few weeks. id like to use the gps on my iphone 4 but dont want to get hit with huge data usage fees from verizon. this brings me to my question.....

if im using a GPS app on my iphone 4, is this using data and will i see charges on my bill for data roaming ?

not 100% sure, but i believe when you use an application that shoots you a little arrow at the top right of the screen, it means you're zoning on your location. When you're not oversees, it doesnt cost any more to use. data packages usually cover worldwide areas wherever there is a service provider (satellite/signal tower). again, not sure, but that's what i know! good luck
