Do location based reminders use gps all the time?

Do location based reminders use gps all the time causing battery drain or does it use location services using just the 3G triangulation based on cell towers which I think would drain the battery less?

I read somewhere (an article called "7 ways to conserve your iPhone battery") that location-based reminders do, in fact, use GPS all the time.

That would be the only way they can work. And GPS is a huge drain on the battery.
