Date of Text Message on iPhone 4

This one's been bugging me for some time. Am I missing a Setting because all my incoming messages are dated the time and day I open Message on my iPhone. My son sent me a text message LAST SUNDAY after the Redskins won a football game. When I opened my Message icon yesterday, there was his message dated the time I opened it. And yes, I've had other text messages since Sunday. Where was his?

Guess my question is: should text messages be dated when they are sent and not when they are received?

I wish they were too and that each message had a time stamp. I still haven't figured out how apples time stamp works. Sometimes it will update every 17 minutes. some times hour. Just randomly places one there ever now and then.
