I heard somewhere that it is possible to make a link appear as an icon on the home screen, as if it were an app. Thus, if I were to save Google as an icon, every time I touch it, it brings me to Google. If this is possible, how is it done?

Open your Safari browser and look for the icon in this image.

Add a Website Shortcut to the Home Screen
We all have a few sites we visit regularly you can make them even quicker to access by adding shortcuts to your home screen to do this tap the turning arrow icon at the bottom of safari and select ‘Add to Home Screen’

Simply click the middle button with the arrow in it. You must open safari first. Then simply select add to home screen
