Charging errors?

I've read that it harms a battery if you charge a phone to 100 per cent and it should be charged to about 80 per cent. Also, I've read that charging a phone in a protective case is harmful because of heat buildup.

Any truth to these?

That's wrong information.

You can charge your iPhone to 100 % and still keep it plugged in without any harm done.

Certain cases can cause extreme heating, not all of them. If you notice that your iPhone gets hot while charging, remove the case. Otherwise it's not necessary.
