Black out screen when using phone

I have an iPhone 4 that is jail broken. My question is... When I make phone calls my cheek keeps turning of the mic. Is there any way to turn the screen black or any way to keep the mic from going into mute mood?

The screen should turn off automatically when you raise it to your cheek.

It doesn't turn off. On the screen it has the mute button in the upper left corner and some other stuff.

Make sure nothing is covering the proximity sensor which is the small slit above the ear piece.

There must be something wrong with his proximity sensor if the screen does not go black when he raises it to his ear.
