MacRumors writes today that it has learned that following on from AT&T's decision to start unlocking iPhones for out-of-contract customers from last Sunday, the carrier is also unlocking iPhones for US servicemen and women, even those that are still under contract with AT&T. MacRumors says that although it is actually a legal requirement in the US for carriers to suspend their service without penalizing deployed military personnel when the servicemen and women provide their military orders as proof of eligibility, carriers such as AT&T do not have to unlock phones belonging to deployed service personnel. However, the company is apparently going ahead and doing this anyway. MacRumors says that although AT&T has not answered their request for comment on the matter, they have had it confirmed from other sources in the know that AT&T is indeed unlocking iPhones for those active service members who request that they do so. MacRumors advises that deployed soldiers, airmen, sailors and Marines who are interested in having their iPhones unlocked should get in touch directly with AT&T.
