Engadget reports today that it has found out that AT&T will be axing its $10-per-month, 1000 messages bundle from August 21, leaving just its Messaging Unlimited plan for $20-per-month. Other than that, the only choice that the customer who is an infrequent texter will have if they don’t want to pay for all those unlimited texts that they won’t be using, is the pay-per-message option which costs 20 cents per message, or 30 cents for an MMS. Engadget notes that the $30 Family Unlimited Messaging package also remains as an option for a family of texters rather than an individual. After breaking the story based on internal AT&T documents that it had received from a source, Engadget then received official confirmation from an AT&T spokesman of the move to ditch the $10-per-month package. Here’s that quote from AT&T to Engadget in full:

“We regularly evaluate our offers and are making some adjustments to our messaging lineup. Starting August 21, we’re streamlining our text messaging plans for new customers and will offer an unlimited plan for individuals for $20 per month and an unlimited plan for families of up to five lines for $30 per month. The vast majority of our messaging customers prefer unlimited plans and with text messaging growth stronger than ever, that number continues to climb among new customers. Existing customers don’t have to change any messaging plan they have today, even when changing handsets.”
