AT&T Iphone want to upgrade early - need advice

I have a 3gs and am looking to upgrade to the 4s.
Long story - made short; I let my wife take the my upgrade / replacement (non-iphone) becasue she went swimming with her phone.
So my situation is that one contract expires in Jan 2012 and the other in Feb 2013. I've read At&t will allow upgrades 6 months early, but my local store says I'm nuts.
Can anyone point me in the right direction.
Do I just need to suffer for another couple of months or break out an extra $250?

From what I've seen, not experienced personally though, AT&T will normally let customers do an upgrade if they are within 1 month of their upgrade date. However... if you're one of the upper tier premier customers, how they decide this I'm not certain, they have graced them w/ upgrades up to 6 months early.

It seems like AT&T will let you upgrade after 18 months. To verify:
Go to the Apple Web Site: iPhone 4S - Buy iPhone 4S for AT&T, Verizon, Sprint - Free shipping - Apple Store (U.S.)
Shop on-line
Select iPhone
click Upgrade Eligibility
click your carrier
enter your existing phone number etc.
They will then list your upgrade options etc.
