MacRumors reports today that AT&T has announced that from July 17 all iPhone models will become eligible for its standard Mobile Insurance program, which provides all the usual insurance-type protection against loss, theft, accidental damage, and so on. Here’s the relevant quote from AT&T’s website:

“*Please Note: AT&T Mobile Insurance Update: Effective July 17, 2011, the Apple iPhone (all models) will be eligible for coverage with the AT&T Mobile Insurance program (formerly Wireless Phone Insurance). Enrolment restrictions apply. Customers can only enrol within 30 days of a new activation or upgrade, prior activations or upgrades outside of 30 days are not eligible.”
The scheme costs $4.99 per month, and what makes this change newsworthy is the fact that up until now, AT&T has treated the iPhone as a separate case when it comes to insurance. MacRumors notes that owners of the first iPhone couldn’t even insure it at all via AT&T, and it wasn’t until 2010 that AT&T and an outside company provided an iPhone insurance package ($11.99 per month).
