Pre-orders for the Apple Watch began last Friday in several key territories around the world, and according to the first estimates that have emerged, it looks as though there were almost 1 million pre-orders on the first day.

AppleInsider reports that using data compiled from a panel of two million online consumers, Slice Intelligence said that 957,000 customers in the U.S. preordered an Apple Watch on the first day of availability.

Just as predicted, it seems that the cheaper Watch Sport model sold the best, accounting for approximately 62 percent of orders.

Slice Intelligence says that based on data from 9,090 shoppers, Apple Watch buyers bought an average of 1.3 watches, spending $503.83 per device. Breaking this figure down further, those buying Sport watches spent $382.83 per order, and those buying the stainless steel Apple Watch spent $707.04.

The 42mm Watch, the larger model, was more popular, with the Space Gray aluminum Sport Watch being the most popular over all, with 40 percent of pre-orders. Thirty-four percent pre-ordered the silver stainless steel, and 23 percent chose the raw aluminum. Just 3 percent bought the diamond-like carbon-coated Space Black watch.

Are there any pre-order numbers for the other countries where customers can pre-order the Apple Watch?
