On December the 14th, Apple finally released its latest smartphone – the iPhone 5, to one of its biggest untapped markets in Asia - China. So, there’s no surprise that three days later, Apple is counting impressive sales. CEO Tim Cook himself announced that, although the device went on sale on Friday, in just three short weekend days, the number of orders has reached two millions.

"Customer response to iPhone 5 in China has been incredible, setting a new record with the best first weekend sales ever in China. China is a very important market for us and customers there cannot wait to get their hands on Apple products."

Nevertheless, rumors coming from analysts told a story of a quieter release. Fortune’s Philip Elmer-DeWitt explains that this error was possible by not taking into account how busy carrier business was in the three days. Instead, all eyes were set on the Apple stores and outlets offering unsubsidized iPhones.

The China launch is part of Apple’s plan of expanding to a total of 100 new markets by the end of the year. When it first launched back in September, Cupertino sold more than five million iPhone 5s, so the fact that it sold 2 million in China is a big deal. The initial roll out included 9 important markets such as the US, UK, France Germany and Japan.

wow thoes numbers seem really low for china. not too mention thoes numbers were for a 5 day period.
i find it hillarious that they say that "Customer response to iPhone 5 in China has been incredible, setting a new record with the best first weekend sales ever in China"
notice how they say iphone 5. and they do not say something like (setting a new record for a smart phone) that's because thier are phones that have sold more than 5million
in 5 days. hell they could have sold just 1 iphone5 and it still would have set a record for how many iphones sold in china lol..

recent market research has revealed that the Galaxy S3 is more popular than iPhone 5. Even seven months after its release, the phone has been getting more customers in the country.
