Applied Materials recently held and earnings conference call in which they revealed a four-fold increase in orders for their materials. The reason that is significant is they are one of the main suppliers for the materials necessary for companies like Samsung and LG to make OLED displays for smartphones.

This massive jump in orders lends credence to the rumors that Apple is gearing up to release an OLED based display on their iPhone in 2017. Here's a quote that sheds further light on the subject,

"It's not a peak or a one-time event," said Applied Materials Chief Executive Officer Gary Dickerson. "This is going to be sustainable growth. We all know who is the leader in terms of mobile products."

Here's a bit of interesting speculation: perhaps Apple will jump straight from the iPhone 7 this year to an iPhone 8 next year, instead of going with an iPhone 7S. The reason for that is because the next-gen iPhone for 2017 will be such a big change to the design that it wouldn't make sense to name it as an incremental "S" upgrade. What do you folks think?
