Just as predicted this weekend, Apple has today announced that it has acquired music recognition platform Shazam.
“We are thrilled that Shazam and its talented team will be joining Apple,” said Apple in a statement to 9to5Mac. “Since the launch of the App Store, Shazam has consistently ranked as one of the most popular apps for iOS. Today, it’s used by hundreds of millions of people around the world, across multiple platforms.

“Apple Music and Shazam are a natural fit, sharing a passion for music discovery and delivering great music experiences to our users. We have exciting plans in store, and we look forward to combining with Shazam upon approval of today’s agreement.”

Of course, Shazam is already integrated with Siri, just ask her and she will tell you what song is playing just like the Shazam app would.

As we reported on Saturday, Shazam’s media recognition services will also be of great interest to Apple’s augmented reality ambitions.

With the deal said to be worth around $400 million, this would be one of the biggest acquisitions that Apple has ever made.
