Airplay

Can someone please brief me a bit more about airplay?
Does that mean you need another apple device like a TV to play stuff from your iphone?

OK finally got it to work. I can play and watch videos which are located on my PC on my iphone with airplay through my WIFI, but can it be done the other way around.

It can be done if you have the apple tv.
