Accessing synced music in an unactivated iPhone

I am using an early generation 8g iPhone that a friend gave me. I am using it unactivated and mostly for WiFi. I have been trying to sync music into it from my MacBook. The sync goes well but I am not able to find the music in the iPhone. When I click iTunes in the iPhone it tries to get me to sign up and give a credit card number. Is there any other route to accessing the music I have synced into it other than the iTunes?
