Accessing emails in an iphone4

My wife was been the iphone4 given by our daughter. The phone and web access are all working fine but between us we seem to have messed up the email part.

Right now, the mail icon seems to suggest that 28 emails have been 'pushed' to the phone but when the icon is clicked, I get a window with the heading 'Account Added' and three rows showing:

Mail
Calendars
Notes

Mail is greyed out but none of them do anything. I cannot get beyond this.

I would add that my wife has two email addresses.
Her main one would not verify and I deleted it.
The second is her gmail address.

Both addresses work fine on two computers.

Any advice would be welcome. TIA

Delete the accounts in Settings.app > Mails, Contacts, Calendars. Reboot the device to clear out the cache (respring if you're jailbroken). Re-enter the credentials. Make sure that the credentials match as well as the domain like Gmail or Yahoo and such. And make sure that the two-step log-in methods are turned off like the text/voice verification for Gmail and Yahoo mail that they advertise for extra security.

I have since done as suggested.
My wife has two email addresses.

I entered her gmail address details and mails are received and sent perfectly.

However, when I tried to establish her main account (private domain), the iphone
persistently returns a message saying that either the username or password are
incorrect. I've re-entered them 'n' times without success. I can send on the
server associated with that domain but not receive.

Just before I did this I entered the same details into both my wife's laptop and my desktop
and tested them without experiencing any problems.

The iphone also dislikes the smtp address for the outgoing mail, the
same one that I use on my computer and my Android phone.

Makes no sense to me.
