I am new to this phone so I am not sure I know what shutting down means. They don't seem to be open but how do I tell for sure?

I am getting texts and voicemail that were sent/left days before and the phone is generally operating slower than when I first started using it last month. Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this may be happening?
