When all was said and done I ended up with a new iPhone 4 8gb. Had shipping issues with the 16gb and then Verizon wouldn't really work with me with getting it turned on instead of the 8 once I got it. So I have the 8gb....and love it!

Found an app called IMO and seems to work well. It is able to be used across multiple messaging apps.
