Was/is this £1 promotion ever genuine?

my mum who does not and never has had any iPhone has got a text advertising iPhone 6 for £1 yes 1 pound. I instantly thought con or a mistake. But after searching google found a site (not sure if I can put what site) advertising that Apple are giving away iphone6 for a pound. Then I spotted the date the offer ends 10th June last year. Was this ever a genuine offer or is it as I guessed a fake?

This was scam, nothing else. Apple never offered the iPhone 6 for 1£. I've read that if you are directed to a survey, or would have to participate in an online contest, with the only purpose to sign you up for something that costs money, or to find and use vulnerabilities on your computer.

If something sounds too good to be true, it's scam, most of the time.
