It seems like it was just yesterday folks were waiting for Apple to release an iPhone running on 3G networks. Panning over a few years, the 4G LTE network has become the norm for all smartphones found in user's hands.

According to a report from CNET, Verizon Wireless will be the world's first carrier to begin moving towards a 5th generation cellular network. The article claims Verizon's field trials will begin sometime in the next 12 months, but of course it will be a few years before we see an iPhone running 5G.

Verizon's internal tests show that the 5G network will be 30 to 50 times faster than what we are currently experiencing with 4G LTE. The new network will be even faster than Google's Fiber network, making downloading something like a movie possible in seconds rather than minutes.

CNET states that the 5th generation technology is also more power-efficient, "so devices are expected to last ten times as long". With the huge upgrade Apple made to its iPhones last year, battery-life has become less of a problem, but we're always happy to welcome more.

They're going to have to completely change the way they bill customers for data use, otherwise you could see people burning through their monthly data allowance in a few seconds.
