To Sync or not to Sync?

I wanted to Sync my 5 with my laptop for the first time. IOS7 installed.

I get the following message:

"iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPhone “X’s iPhone”.
Go to the Summary tab in iPhone preferences and click
Restore to restore this iPhone to factory settings."

When that happened with my iPhone4 - I lost most of my apps and many downloads.

I don't want that to happen again.

Any suggestions?
