Vertu is a British manufacturer and retailer of luxury, handmade mobile phones established by Finnish mobile-phone manufacturer Nokia in 1998.

Handsets are sold through an emphasis on craftsmanship, style and service, rather than mobile phone functions. In 2006, the most expensive model it had ever made was the Signature Cobra, at £213,000 (~$310,000); the most expensive 2006 regular model was the Signature Diamond at £55,000 (~$83,000). In 2006, prices started at £3,500 for the Constellation model. The flagship model is called the Signature. Its key pad contains nearly 5 carats of ruby bearings and a full sapphire crystal covering the entire display.

Other models include: Ascent, Constellation Classic, Ayxta, along with smartphones Constellation Quest, and the Constellation Touch (released October 2011). Ascent phones are designed to be lightweight and durable, made of aluminium or titanium with vulcanised rubber and leather. The Constellation Classics are simple and small handsets. Ayxtas are flip phones that come in numerous variants and colors. The Quest is the first smartphone by Vertu, equipped with a full QWERTY keyboard made from sapphire sculpted keys. This was followed by Constellation in 2011 which was the company's first touchscreen model. In February 2013, Vertu launched the Vertu Ti, the first Vertu handset to use an Android operating system, and most recently in June 2014, they launched Signature Touch. The Signature Touch's price ranged $10,300/€7,900 for the base model to maximum price of $21,900/€16,900 for the Pure Jet Red Gold.

Information about the Signature, from Vertu:
"From its first prototype, Signature was hand crafted with the finest rare materials, to create something not only desirable but of unmatched durability and unparalleled quality.

  • We have used 83 carats of sapphire crystal to create the stunning seven-piece Signature face. The "sea of sapphire" takes more than two weeks to create in a 2000ºC furnace. Almost impossible to scratch, it is so hard it must be cut, ground and polished with diamond-tipped tools.
  • Beautiful as well as functional, the SIM drawer is engraved with a unique Vertu pattern like a piece of jewellery in its own right. The SIM drawer in the precious metal phones go a step further: they are made from solid gold and stamped with the Vertu and Swiss Assay Office hallmarks.
  • Our patented ruby key pad contains 4.75 carats of solid ruby bearings, each cut and set in its exact place like a jewel.
  • The finest leather is hand selected for the perfect grip and hand finished for grain, structure and feel. Our battery cover leather is painstakingly matched to ensure the grain is always consistent and fits to perfection."

And I thought I was bad for shelling out $600.00+ for an iPhone!

The Signature Touch series (11 handsets) all run Android. You'd think for the money they would design and build their own custom OS.
