Snapchat has today announced via its official blog that it is launching a new feature—Discover, which it describes thus:

“Snapchat Discover is a new way to explore Stories from different editorial teams. It’s the result of collaboration with world-class leaders in media to build a storytelling format that puts the narrative first. This is not social media.

“Social media companies tell us what to read based on what’s most recent or most popular. We see it differently. We count on editors and artists, not clicks and shares, to determine what’s important.”

After setting out its stall about the new feature, Snapchat goes on to say that Discover “has been built for creatives,” which is what makes it "not social media," apparently. The company says that artists are too often forced to “accommodate new technologies in order to distribute their work. This time we built the technology to serve the art.”

Each edition of Discover will have full-screen photos and videos, long-form layouts, and advertising, of course!

Discover will be refreshed after 24 hours, with Stories at the center of the content, with “a beginning, middle, and end.”

To use Discover in Snapchat, simply tap to open an edition, browse Snaps by swiping left, or up for more on a specific Snap.

Seems like a very bold idea from Snapchat to start expanding its content in such a way.
