This may be too late for some, but if you don't want Sierra on your Mac, you will need to turn off automatic downloads, otherwise the new OS will download.

It will only do so if your Mac has sufficient space and it will not install without your permission.

OMG ! When did this happen...has apple ever done that before....I'm on late 2009 iMac and didn't put sierra on because all I would gain would be Siri and Mac is running well on El Capitan. Would love to hear if anyone has put sierra on 09 Mac to know how it's behaving...
