According to a new report from Nikkei, via AppleInsider, Apple is moving to a 3-year major upgrade cycle for iPhones, meaning that this year’s iPhone will, as expected, be a simple refresh, with the next major upgrade occurring in 2017.

Nikkei thinks that the 2017 iPhone will have an OLED screen (as has been very widely rumoured), as well as several other major design changes, such as a new vibration motor that can produce complex patterns. This could possibly mean a more advanced version of Apple’s Taptic Engine featured in the Apple Watch and iPhone 6s, where subtle differences in touch have different effects.

As far as this year’s upgrade is concerned, Nikkei says that the iPhone 7 will be very similar to last year’s models, and says that the 3.5mm headphone jack will be removed, which ties in with images that emerged last weekend.

As has been reported previously, it’s expected that there will be improvements to the camera, water resistance, and battery technology, and that the higher end version of the new phone (presumably the iPhone 7 Plus) will have new “corrections functions” for the camera. It’s also thought that the iPhone 7 will have optical image stabilization, and the iPhone 7 Plus will have a dual-lens camera.
