MacRumors reports today on a story from Nikkei Asian Review that says that the forthcoming 5.8-inch OLED iPhone 8 will in fact have a curved display, although it won't be as curved as Samsung’s Galaxy S7 Edge.

“This is partly due to the challenge of making curved glass covers to match screens,” said Nikkei Asian Review’s source of the reason why the display will be only slightly curved.

The source also said that Apple “would not be using OLED optimally” if it used it with a flat display. The source also said that the design is still not final (which ties in with other recent rumours that said exactly that), and therefore still might be changed by Apple.

The source said that the curved display would provide “a viewable area of about 5.2 inches,” but will not have any significant new functions.

As far as the accuracy of the report is concerned, both KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Chinese research company TrendForce have said previously that the iPhone 8 will have a curved display.
