'80s arcade classic side-scroller R-Type has finally hit the App Store for iPhone and iPod touch. Retro-gaming fans both old and new will finally get the chance to relive the seminal '80s video-arcade experience on their iPhone/iPod touch, with this latest version of the game staying true to its roots, re-capturing the look and feel of one of the biggest arcade smashes from back in the day.

In the game, you get to pilot a futuristic fighter, the R-9a "Arrowhead", and attack endless waves of Bydo enemies, old-school, side-scrolling style. This new version includes all the features of the original. There are eight levels in total to fly through, and eight unique bosses to defeat along the way. Three different control options are available: tilt, touch and virtual D-Pad, and you can also upgrade with new weapons, power-ups, and attachments.

And just in case you're thinking that eight levels isn't that many and you'll probably breeze through it, don't forget that R-type was named one of IGN's Top 10 "Toughest Games to Beat", so players can expect a game that is very hard to master.
