Purchased ringtones aren't working

I've purchased several ringtones from the iTunes Store, they were working perfectly for awhile. Now they are not working at all. The default ringtone rings but it's set to purchased ringtones.

Was there anything special happening when they stopped working? An iOS update, e.g.?
Are the ringtones still on your iPhone, or did they disppear?

that is why I make my own in garage band

iTunes is pretty painless for making them also
