Problem with 3gs

I bought an iPhone 3GS, and it says I need to upgrade the software but when doing that it comes up with (error-1) does any one know what that means? And is there any way to fix it?

When experiencing the -1 Error... you need to utilize pwned DFU mode instead of regular DFU mode while restoring. Download the latest version of redsn0w (if you don't have it already...) redsn0w has a pwned DFU mode feature that'll walk you through the steps.
