MacRumors reports that new photos have appeared on Chinese website Dianxinshouji.com that appear to show a new Lightning cable with a reversible USB connector.

The source of the photos says that they are from one of Apple’s main manufacturing partners Foxconn. The pictures show a USB connector attached to the middle of the metal casing, whereas the USB connector on the current Lightning cable is attached to the bottom of the inner part of the metal casing.

There’s no way of telling if these photos are genuine, unless Apple confirms them, and that is pretty unlikely, but as MacRumor notes, it was already reported back in May, via Mac Otakara, that Apple was planning to release an upgraded version of the Lightning cable, in order to provide high-definition playback for its Made for iPhone audio range.

MacRumors says that another reason why Apple might be upgrading the Lightning cable USB connector is to make it fully compatible with the new USB 3.1 cables that will soon be available with new smartphones.
