AppleInsider writes that while Nintendo has finally caved in to public opinion and agreed to make smartphone games, it is taking a very cautious approach to the whole thing, and only plans to release five smartphone games over the next couple of years.

The news comes via Nintendo president Satoru Iwata when discussing Nintendo’s (very favourable) March quarter results. Iwata said that the company will “carefully select appropriate IP and titles” for its own brand of smartphone games, the first of which is expected to arrive before the end of this year.
“You may think it is a small number,” said Iwata, “but when we aim to make each title a hit, and because we want to thoroughly operate every one of them for a significant amount of time after their releases, this is not a small number at all, and should demonstrate our serious commitment to the smart device business.”

Nintendo is still very much committed to its own consoles, despite branching out into the world of smartphone gaming, and plans an “integrated membership service” with connectivity via smartphone, tablets, and PCs.
