On Monday, Microsoft issued the version 5.5 update to its Skype applications for the iPhone and iPod Touch application. Skype 5.5 now supports enhanced iOS 8 notifications, which users can interact with using gestures.

Swiping on the notifications from the Lockscreen will allow users to answer or decline incoming calls, video calls or messages. The features comes in addition to standard bug fixes and improvements.

For calls on the Lockscreen:
  • For incoming voice calls – swipe left on the notification to answer or decline.
  • For incoming video calls – swipe left on the notification to answer with voice or video.
  • For missed voice and video calls – swipe left on the notification to call back or send a message.
For notification showing up as a banner:
  • For incoming voice calls — pull down on the notification to answer or decline.
  • For incoming video calls — pull down on the notification to answer with voice or video.
  • For missed calls — pull down on the notification to call back or send a message.
And finally, for standard Skype messages:
  • From the lock screen and the notification center — swipe left on the notification to reply.
  • From the lock screen — pull down on the notification to reply.
Notifications will of course need to be enabled within the settings app. Microsoft's Skype is available as a standalone 46.7-megabyte download, for free in the App Store.
