This whole backdoor debate started in the mid 90's with the "Clipper Chip". Needless to say it was shot down after outside expert cryptologists showed how back doors can be exploited by the bad guys.

If the Feds just read the White Paper on how the iPhone encryption is implemented, they would realize Apple simply can not unlock the phone. It's physically impossible, and that's how Apple designed it.

And I'm so glad they did! Says a lot about them as a company.
 
All companies look out for their own self interest. The difference with Apple is that they do it in a way that's good for their customers as well because Apple certainly realizes that it's those customers that are ultimately responsible for the success that Apple enjoys.
