iTunes backup of iPhone

iTunes is sync'ing my phone 'automatically' to my WinPC - but where is that data?

for info, I keep all my data "not on C:" because, belonging to the Brick of the Month Club, it tends to get trashed at the least convenient time. as if there were ever a convenient . . . .

so I should like to back it up off the pc onto an external.

can one access the photos directly from the iTunes backup-files?

Look at Apple's information where your backup is stored:
Find and manage your iTunes backups - Apple Support

It's not possible to access images from a backup.

iTunes will keep your backups on the C drive by default.
