I all I'm going to new York in August and I was wondering can I buy an iPhone over there and bring it back to Ireland to use here

Yes but 2 things you need to check when you buy it:

1. It's a GSM Model of iPhone (if you get an iPhone 4S this doesn't matter)

2. It's unlocked to any network

Get these things right and it will work no problems

Can I go to the apple store in new York or do I have to buy from a phone shop

Yes, you can buy unlocked iphones from the Apple store. It is probably the best place to go.

Yes, buy a 4S from an Apple store and you should have no problems. My sister brought an iPhone 4S back with her from Boston and it is working fine on the Vodafone network over here...
