Tech Crunch reports that thanks to a record-breaking past few months, Apple’s iPhone sales have now overtaken Android device sales in the U.S. for the first time since 2012.

Kantar Worldpanel ComTech’s figures show that in the holiday sales quarter of Q4 2014, Apple sold more iPhones than all the Android OEMs together. So, great news for Apple, but it should be said in the interest of fairness that the margin is very slim, with iOS devices at 47.7% and Android at 47.6%.

As to whether or not this could be a more long-term trend for Apple, or merely a seasonal surge, Kantar thinks more the former, according to Carolina Milanesi, chief of research at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.

“While the success of the iPhone 6 and 6Plus is unprecedented, this quarter’s performance also points to Apple having its strongest portfolio ever. With a range of devices available at different price points in both contract and pre-pay, Apple was able to take advantage of a weaker Android offering at the premium end of the market.”
