Iphone 4 will not reconize charging cord

I've had my phone for quite some time, it's not jail broken. When I plug the charging cord into phone to charge and or listen to my iTunes it tells me that the accessory may not be supported. I get this message even when I'm trying to just charge it with a cord and a regular wall plug.

Make sure there aren't any particles in the port. Also try hard resetting the device.

I have done both and still get the same results

If you have another cable you can use, try that out. Otherwise, it's a hardware issue with the device mixed in with an iOS software issue

Is there anything I can do short of getting a new phone or rebuilding this one?

Replace the port. It's not extremely difficult to replace, just that it requires a lot of patience and precision to do. The one con of DIY repairs is that you can't run diagnostics to diagnose any issues or whether it's working or not until you've assembled the battery.
