No sooner have we written about the news from Consumer Reports that they don’t think the iPhone 5 is quite as brill as some other smartphones, there’s better news for Apple on the way, with iDownload Blog reporting on a new survey from Kantar Worldpanel, which finds that Apple’s iOS is now the best-selling smartphone operating system in the US, having managed to obtain over 50% of sales for the first time ever. According to Kantar, the increase in market share is a result of people buying the discounted iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. At the same time as iOS’s share rose to 53.3%, Android sales fell to 41.9% of the US market, representing a 10.9% drop during the three months ending November 25 2012. As iDownload Blog notes, last week Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi wrote that “95 percent of current iPhone users in Europe and North America plan on repurchasing an iPhone now,” which is in contrast to the 75% of Android customers who say they will repurchase another Android device. Could this be a significant factor in iOS’s increase and Android’s fall?

Great news and I believe it was certain to happen. The main reason is Android no longer has a killer app. I still think the best Gmail experience is on an Android phone (and the free, exclusive Google Navigation is great on Android), but it’s no killer app. Even as an Android user, I can easily make do using Gmail, Google Voice, Google+, and other Google services on iOS.
